21 Killed, Dozens Missing After Landslide in Western Kenya
…………
At least 21 people have been confirmed dead following a landslide in western Kenya’s Marakwet East region after heavy rainfall, the BBC reported. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said more than 30 people remain missing, while 25 others with serious injuries were airlifted for treatment. Rescue operations were halted on Saturday evening due to poor conditions but resumed on Sunday.
The Kenyan Red Cross said access to affected areas remains difficult because of mudslides and flooding. Authorities warned residents near seasonal rivers and previous landslide zones to relocate to safer ground. Continuous rainfall has caused the Astiri and Sipi rivers to overflow, destroying homes, farmland, and key infrastructure across the region.
