A wave of public anger has erupted in the Kete area of western Karachi Municipality, Ghana, after local entities began selling long-standing Islamic endowment (waqf) lands—traditionally reserved for prayer and religious gatherings—for commercial development.

Muslim community leaders have condemned the move as a violation of their religious heritage, warning it threatens to erase a vital part of the region’s Islamic identity. The disputed lands hold deep spiritual and cultural significance, and community members say the sales reflect a deliberate effort to marginalize Muslim presence in public spaces.

Local elders described the situation as a “forced estrangement” of Islamic heritage, warning that continued inaction could lead to the loss of key religious landmarks. Residents have pledged to pursue legal action to reclaim the sold properties and are urging Ghanaian authorities to intervene and protect Islamic endowments. They warn that unchecked development risks destabilizing the region’s cultural and religious balance.
