John Mahama Sworn in for Second Term as President of Ghana Amid Concerns Over Human Rights
John Mahama was officially sworn in for his second term as President of Ghana during a vibrant ceremony at Black Star Square in Accra, attended by around 20 African leaders and thousands of enthusiastic supporters, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the presidential elections on December 9, 2024, securing 56% of the votes against Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who received 41%.
This inauguration marks a significant political shift, ending eight years of New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose administration faced economic challenges.
Following the inauguration, Amnesty International urged Mahama to prioritize human rights protections, including gender equality and the right to peaceful assembly. As illegal mining activities continue to harm the environment, Amnesty urged the government to take action to protect communities.
