Major Fire Devastates Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana
A significant fire broke out on January 1 at Kantamanto, one of the world’s largest second-hand clothing markets in Accra, Ghana, destroying approximately two-thirds of the market, The Guardian reported. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deployed 13 fire tenders to combat the blaze, which is believed to have been triggered by faulty electrical connections, though arson is not ruled out.
The fire has left around 8,000 traders, many of whom rely on the market for their livelihoods, facing substantial losses. Goods worth millions of Ghanaian cedi were destroyed, impacting thousands of families. The Or Foundation has pledged $1 million to assist in the cleanup and recovery efforts.
Local traders expressed despair over their losses, stating that their livelihoods have been severely affected. Community leaders emphasize the need for immediate support to help rebuild and restore the market, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable fashion and economic resilience.
