Construction work is continuing on Al-Hidaya Islamic University in the Gurage area of central Ethiopia, as part of an educational project aimed at expanding access to higher Islamic education and serving Muslim communities in central regions of the country and surrounding areas.

In this context, the First Deputy Chairman of Ethiopia’s Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Abdul Karim Sheikh Badruddin, conducted an inspection visit to the project site in Gumer Woreda, Gurage Zone, to review progress and assess the current stages of construction.

During the visit, Sheikh Badruddin stated that construction is proceeding at a satisfactory pace, noting that the project’s foundation stone was laid in December 2015 according to the Ethiopian calendar, which differs from the widely used Gregorian calendar and should be taken into account when reviewing project timelines.

He highlighted the university’s strategic location, emphasizing its potential role in serving students and Muslim communities in central Ethiopia, thereby contributing to greater educational equity and broader access to higher education institutions.

Sheikh Badruddin stressed that completing the project within the planned timeframe requires continued support from the Muslim community, calling for sustained backing until construction is finalized and the university begins its academic and research activities.

He also acknowledged the contributions of supporting institutions and individuals through technical expertise, financial assistance, and direct involvement, describing this collective effort as essential to advancing the project.

The Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Ethiopia was established under Proclamation No. 1207/2020 as a legal body representing the religious and developmental interests of the Muslim community at the federal level, with branches across the country’s regions and states.
