Ethiopia Evacuates 80,000 Amid Earthquake Fears

In response to a series of earthquakes, the Ethiopian government is evacuating approximately 80,000 residents from the Afar, Oromia, and Amhara regions, VOA reported yesterday.

Since Friday, at least 10 earthquakes have been recorded, the strongest measuring 5.8 magnitude, affecting areas including Addis Ababa.

The Dofen volcano has shown signs of potential eruption, with smoke observed, raising concerns among officials. The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission indicated that over 51,000 people are at risk, with more than 13,000 already relocated.

Experts warn that many buildings, particularly in Addis Ababa, are vulnerable due to outdated building codes established in 1983. The government is reinforcing critical infrastructure and has formed task forces to monitor the situation. As seismic activity continues, authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
