Nearly 230 Dead in Southern Ethiopia Landslide
The death toll from a landslide in southern Ethiopia has risen to 229, Xinhua reported yesterday citing local officials.
The tragedy struck on Monday morning around 10:00 a.m. local time in the Geze Gofa District. Among the deceased are 148 males and 81 females, as reported by the Gofa Zone Government Communication Affairs Department.
Rescue operations are underway, with the Ethiopian Red Cross Association and professionals from nearby regions assisting the victims.
This landslide occurred during Ethiopia’s rainy season, which began in July and is expected to continue until mid-September. Seasonal rains often lead to such deadly landslides in various parts of the East African nation.
