UN Warns of Deepening Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DR Congo
………….
The humanitarian situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is rapidly deteriorating amid ongoing conflict and severe funding shortages, the Anadolu Agency reported. The UN World Food Program (WFP) warned that continued clashes and restricted access are worsening hunger and displacement across the region.
WFP Country Director Cynthia Jones said tens of thousands have fled their homes, particularly in provinces affected by M23 rebel activity. She noted that aid operations are hampered by insecurity and the closure of two airports since January, urging the establishment of a humanitarian air corridor to improve access.
According to UN-backed assessments, nearly 25 million people across DR Congo are facing high levels of food insecurity. Jones explained that many families are skipping meals, selling livestock, and depleting assets to survive.
The WFP appealed for $350 million in emergency funding to sustain food and nutrition programs over the next six months, warning that without support, assistance could drop to only 300,000 people—just 10% of those in need. Despite a ceasefire agreement signed in July, fighting between government forces and M23 rebels continues, leaving about 7 million people internally displaced.
