Oxfam Warns of Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing one of the world’s most severe yet overlooked humanitarian crises, which continues to worsen, AhramOnline reported. Oxfam France said the situation is particularly dire in the eastern region, where conflict has raged for three decades and intensified earlier this year after the M23 rebel group captured key cities including Goma and Bukavu.

More than 1.6 million people have been displaced in 2025 alone, bringing the total to 5.2 million—the second highest globally after Sudan. Around 28 million people are facing hunger, while health services and infrastructure remain devastated. Oxfam highlighted alarming levels of sexual violence, with one woman raped every four minutes.

The charity warned that international funding for aid has fallen by two-thirds over the past year and urged stronger global commitments ahead of an international conference on the African Great Lakes region in France on October 30.
