African Health Body Raises Alarm Over Measles Outbreak in Eastern DR Congo

Africa’s continental health organization has raised concerns about a measles outbreak in war-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, primarily affecting North and South Kivu provinces, Anadolu Agency reported. The country has recorded 12,000 cases and 180 deaths, with the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation exacerbating the crisis.

Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa CDC, stated, “If our regional leaders can guarantee our safety, I will be the first one to fly to that region, to deliver medicines and vaccines to those in need.” He also highlighted a concerning 18% testing rate for mpox in Kivu due to ongoing conflict.

Additionally, Kaseya reported a cholera outbreak in South Sudan, with nearly 800 deaths from 1 million cases, citing vaccination issues due to security challenges. He noted that health care financing for Africa has significantly decreased, dropping from $81 billion to $25 billion, prompting efforts to mobilize domestic resources and innovative financing solutions.
