IS-Linked Attack in Eastern Congo Leaves Nine Dead

In a tragic incident on Saturday, Islamic State-linked rebels attacked the village of Ngohi Vuyinga in North Kivu province, eastern Congo, resulting in the deaths of at least nine villagers, KTLA 5 reported. Local civil society leader Samuel Kagheni reported that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an IS affiliate, assaulted residents with guns and machetes while they were tending to their farms. The attack also led to the displacement of dozens and the destruction of several homes.

Kagheni warned that the death toll could rise as some villagers remain unaccounted for. The ongoing violence in eastern Congo, fueled by over 100 armed groups vying for control of the region’s mineral wealth, has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, displacing approximately 7 million people. Local leaders have expressed frustration over the government’s lack of effective intervention, questioning the Congolese armed forces’ ability to protect civilians amidst relentless attacks.
