UNICEF Raises Alarm Over Rising Violations Against Children in Eastern DRC

UNICEF has expressed deep concern over a surge in grave violations against children in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the organization’s website reported.

Reports indicate that incidents have tripled since the violence escalated on January 24, 2025. Notably, cases of sexual violence have increased by more than 150%, abductions have risen sixfold, and killings and maiming have surged sevenfold. Attacks on schools and hospitals have multiplied by 12.

Jean Francois Basse, UNICEF’s acting Representative in DRC, emphasized the urgent need for all parties to halt these violations, stating, “The conflict is tearing families apart, leading to widespread insecurity.”

The conflict has disrupted essential services, leaving thousands of schools closed and children vulnerable. UNICEF has identified 1,200 unaccompanied children, successfully reuniting 720 with their families. The organization calls for immediate action to protect children and uphold international humanitarian law. Basse urged, “Perpetrators must be held to account to end the cycle of impunity.”
