Rwanda-Backed M23 Rebels Occupy Bukavu in Eastern Congo

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels on Sunday seized control of Bukavu, the second-largest city in eastern Congo, amid escalating violence that has displaced over 6 million people, Arab News reported. The M23, part of a coalition known as the Congo River Alliance, claimed they entered Bukavu to restore order after Congolese forces abandoned the city.

Alliance spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka stated that their forces aim to enhance security for the local population. However, the Congolese government acknowledged the occupation and vowed to restore order, yet many soldiers were reportedly fleeing alongside civilians.

The M23, supported by approximately 4,000 Rwandan troops, has been involved in a prolonged struggle for control over eastern Congo’s vast mineral wealth. Fears of regional escalation persist, with analysts noting a shift in the M23’s objectives towards political power. The situation remains critical, with calls for a ceasefire and dialogue from the international community.
