Dozens of Soldiers Killed in Northern Burkina Faso Base Attack
…………………..
Around 50 soldiers were reportedly killed in an assault on a military base in northern Burkina Faso, according to a local leader and a resident, as reported by ABC News agency.
The attack took place on Monday at a base in Dargo, located in Boulsa province.
Sources, who spoke to the Associated Press under condition of anonymity due to fear of retaliation, said that approximately 100 militants stormed the base, looting and setting it on fire after killing the troops.
The armed group Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, is suspected of being behind the attack. JNIM is one of several extremist groups active in the region and has been linked to numerous deadly assaults across West Africa.
As of Tuesday, Burkina Faso’s military authorities had not issued any official statement about the incident. The West African nation has been grappling with escalating violence, with militant groups reportedly controlling large areas beyond the capital.
The worsening security crisis has contributed to political instability, including two military coups since 2022. Despite efforts by the current leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the violence has continued unabated.
