African leaders have backed a peace process aimed at ending the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Anadolu Agency reported. The endorsement came from a virtual joint summit of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The summit’s communique announced the appointment of a panel of facilitators, including former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, to steer an inclusive dialogue. Other members of the panel include former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe.
The leaders also called for the immediate mobilization of humanitarian aid resources, to be coordinated by the African Union Commission (AUC). The summit praised the presidents of DR Congo and Rwanda for their commitment to dialogue to resolve the conflict between the Congolese army and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.
