African Union Calls for Ramadan Ceasefire in Sudan

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has urged warring parties in Sudan to observe a humanitarian ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan, beginning in March 2025, Sudan Tribune reported. In a statement issued on February 19, the council expressed deep concern over escalating violence, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and violations of international humanitarian law.

The AUPSC reiterated its call for an immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the conflict. It condemned external interference fueling the war and demanded an end to military and financial support to the warring factions.

The council stressed the need for safe humanitarian access to affected populations and the opening of humanitarian corridors. It highlighted the importance of an inclusive, Sudanese-led political dialogue as the only viable path to resolving the crisis.

The AUPSC commended Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership in facilitating talks between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. It also called on the African Union Commission to continue engaging civilian actors in the peace process.
