Climate Crisis to Push 150 Million Africans into Poverty by 2050, Experts Warn

Experts have warned that the climate crisis will drive an additional 150 million people into poverty in Africa by 2050, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

Magda Robalo Silva, from the Institute for Global Health and Development, highlighted that floods and droughts are displacing vast populations, severely affecting access to nutrition and leading to malnutrition and infectious diseases. Speaking at a leadership forum in Dakar, Silva emphasized the urgent need for action to combat this looming crisis.

The forum, hosted by Gallen Africa, gathered over 100 youths from 16 African nations to discuss solutions. Awa Marie Seck, former health minister of Senegal and chair of Gallen Africa, described the climate crisis as a significant threat to public health. She urged for collaboration between generations, leveraging digital platforms to share knowledge and experiences. Countries like Niger, Chad, Nigeria, Mali, Cameroon, and the DR Congo are already experiencing devastating floods, resulting in hundreds of deaths and millions affected.
