Green Economy Could Create 3.3M Jobs across Africa by 2030

A new report by FSD Africa and Shortlist forecasts that Africa could generate 3.3 million jobs by 2030 through a transition to a greener economy, the Guardian reported yesterday.

The majority of these roles, particularly in renewable energy, are expected to be skilled positions that could foster the growth of the middle class. Key countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa are projected to contribute significantly to this job creation.

The renewable energy sector alone could account for 70% of the new jobs, with solar power leading the way. However, to realize this potential, substantial investments—estimated at over $100 billion annually—are needed, along with effective training programs.

Experts emphasize the importance of supportive policies and infrastructure to attract investments and ensure a just transition, addressing both economic growth and the urgent need for employment in Africa’s youthful population.
