France, Germany combine efforts to counter illegal immigration to Europe

The German and French interior ministers visited Tunisia on Sunday, June 18, to explore ways to reduce illegal crossings to Europe in order to cut deaths of refugees on the dangerous routes of the Mediterranean Sea.

According to a statement issued by the German Interior Minister, discussions with Tunisia will focus on current important migration and security issues, including promoting legal migration channels, reducing illegal migration and human trafficking.

The two-day trip of the German and French Ministers of Interior to Tunisia takes place after the tragic sinking of a refugee ship, which is likely to be the deadliest shipwreck of refugees in recent years in the Mediterranean Sea.

It is expected that more than 500 men, women and children who were on their way to Italy from Libya drowned on the southern coast of Greece during the overturning of this fishing ship on Wednesday, June 14.

This tragedy has fueled severe criticism of Europe’s failed policies in dealing with illegal refugee crossings through the Mediterranean Sea.

Meanwhile, Shahbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, announced a day of public mourning due to the death of hundreds of Pakistanis in this incident.

According to the Geonews report, the flag of Pakistan will be half-raised in all parts of the country on Monday, June 19.
