Morocco announces the opening date for mosques months after the closure

Mosques in Morocco will reopen their doors next week, after they have been closed since last March, in the context of measures to tackle the Corona pandemic, with the continued closure during Friday prayers.

Mosques in Morocco will reopen their doors next week, after they have been closed since last March, in the context of measures to tackle the Corona pandemic, with the continued closure during Friday prayers.

“It was decided, after consulting the health and administrative authorities, that the mosques will gradually be reopened to perform the five daily prayers, beginning with the noon prayer on Wednesday, July 15,” the Moroccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs said in a statement.

But the ministry confirmed that the mosques will remain closed “until a later time”, for the Friday prayers, which attract more numbers of worshipers.

The ministry asked worshipers to abide by the precautionary measures, “especially wearing masks and social distancing.” 

The Kingdom of Morocco, with a population of 35 million, accelerated the process of lifting the closure on June 25th, with the reopening of cafes, restaurants, hotels and gyms, as well as the resumption of domestic tourism and transportation between cities.
