Diyala Police Director Brigadier Nihad al-Mahdawi said in a statement that elements of the Sixth Regiment and detachments from the River Police Rescue Department, with backup from the Commando Brigade began a military operation to raid and search the Sheikh Baba Basin in the outskirts of Jalula district (70 km northeast) Baquba.”
Al-Mahdawi added that the operation comes to prevent the existence of any safe havens for ISIS, end the activity of its sleeper cells, enhance security checkpoints, and ward off the dangers of terrorists from the villages of Sheikh Baba.
The villages of Sheikh Baba were recently subjected to several attacks by ISIS, which led to civilian casualties.
