Twenty-four Afghan security men were killed in an attack carried out by armed men who infiltrated and targeted their base in southern Afghanistan.

The spokesman for the governor of Zabul Province, Rahmatullah Yirmal, said six infiltrators disguised as police opened fire on the security forces while they were asleep.

For his part, Zabul Provincial Council official, Atta Jan Haq Bayan, said the attackers were linked to the Taliban terrorist movement.

This comes at a time when the Afghan presidency announced that it will gradually release 5,000 prisoners from the Taliban, provided that the frequency of violence decreases “significantly.”
