United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the international community to find a solution to the plight of the Rohingya Muslims, in Rakhine State, western Myanmar.
The Secretary-General’s call came during a session of the UN Security Council, which stressed the importance of coordination and cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
ASEAN includes Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia, as well as the countries of the Indian and Pacific region, which include Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand.
Guterres stressed the importance of working to implement the recommendations of the Advisory Committee for Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine), western Myanmar.
“It is imperative that international efforts find a solution to the plight of the Rohingya refugees who are still living in desperate conditions, and we consider our enhanced cooperation with ASEAN crucial to help advance concrete steps,” he added.
The Advisory Committee was formed in Arakan, September 2016, chaired by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who submitted a report that included recommendations aimed at ending the plight of the Rohingya, achieving economic development, allowing humanitarian organizations access to them, ensuring freedom of movement, and granting them the right to citizenship and identity.
Since August 25, 2017, the Myanmar military and Buddhist militias have launched a military campaign and brutal massacres against the Rohingya in Arakan province.
