The authorities of Burkina Faso announced that gunmen killed 35 civilians, most of them women, after they attacked a military post, and 87 armed men and security personnel were also killed in the clash.
In a statement, the army said that after several hours, its forces had managed to repel the militants, seizing a large amount of weapons and motorcycles.
“As they fled, the terrorists killed 35 civilians, including 31 women, in a despicable manner,” the government said in a separate statement, adding that 80 militants and seven security personnel had died in combat earlier.
President Rock Marc Capuret declared a two-day national mourning in the West African country.
The accident follows an attack by militant terrorists on a bus convoy carrying miners in November, which killed about 40 people.
