Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohammad Sabu has expressed concern about the situation of Rohingya Muslims.
He made the remarks at a meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in the Thai capital Bangkok, Bernama news agency reported.
Sabu expressed concern over the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, stressing that the situation should be handled wisely in order to prevent Rohingya Muslims from seeking refuge in Myanmar’s neighboring countries, including Malaysia, and to engage in extremist ideologies.
About 900,000 Rohingya refugees now live in Cox’s Bazar camps in Bangladesh, and more than 740,000 are believed to have fled Myanmar since August 2017.
Since that date, the Myanmar armed forces and Buddhist militias have waged a military campaign and brutal massacres have been committed against the Muslim minority in Arakan (west).
As a result of the ongoing crimes since then, thousands of Rohingya Muslims have been killed, according to local and international sources, as well as the displacement of nearly one million to Bangladesh, according to the United Nations.
