Afghan government forces killed 53 Taliban militants overnight as they tried to launch an offensive in the northwestern province of Faryab.
“A large-scale offensive began Saturday night by extremists on the city of Maimana (capital of Faryab province),” military spokesman Hanif Rezaei said, adding that “while repelling the attack, with the support of aviation and artillery, 53 terrorists were eliminated, including senior commanders.”
He continued, “The bodies of the gunmen are still on the battlefield, and their identity is being confirmed.”
According to Rezaei, four soldiers were wounded while repelling the attack, while no civilians were injured in the operation
