The United Nations expresses its “shock” at reports of a massacre of civilians in Myanmar

A United Nations official said he was “shocked” by credible reports that at least 35 civilians were killed and their bodies burned in Myanmar, calling on the government to open an investigation.
“I condemn this grave incident and all attacks on civilians that are prohibited under international humanitarian law,” Martin Griffiths, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said in a statement.”
Pictures of two burnt trucks and a car on a highway in the town of Habrosu, Kaya state, with charred bodies inside, circulated social media networks.
Two workers for the non-profit organization Save the Children are still missing after their vehicle was among several cars that were attacked and burned in the accident.
Local media blamed the military council for the attack.
Myanmar has been in chaos since the February coup, in which more than 1,300 people were killed in a crackdown by security forces, according to a local monitoring group.
