Bahrain’s February 14 Youth Coalition, a major opposition group, called for rallies in the country on the day of Ashura.
The Imam Hussein (AS) uprising continues as long as injustice and oppression exists, the group said, the Manama Post daily reported.
It urged the Bahraini people to attend the rallies in large numbers and defy the Manama regime’s attempts to intimidate Muharram mourners.
Meanwhile, Bahraini officials, including the governor of Manama, have said there will be special security measures in the country on Ashura, which falls on Tuesday.
Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf, has been witnessing regular protests against the ruling Al Khalifa regime since February 2011, with security forces resorting to crackdown against demonstrators.
Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the protests.
