China plans to use technology companies using the fifth generation communications system (5G) to monitor the Muslim minority, a move that could ignite what has been described as the biggest ethnic-based arrest campaign since World War II, a British newspaper reported Sunday.
According to the report, the Chinese authorities are using new communications technology to monitor the behavior of the approximately 11 million Muslim minority in Xinjiang, via street surveillance cameras, and put a digital bar code on the doors of Muslim homes there.
The author of the report quotes technology experts as describing what is happening as a large-scale surveillance, noting that the undeclared data submitted to the state on Uighurs Muslims lead the Chinese police to carry out the largest ethnic arrests since 1945 and that the number of Uighurs detained in Chinese prisons has reached one million.
