A lecture by Bruce B. Lawrence at the University of New England’s Tangier Global Forum explore the phenomenon that has resulted in today’s rich selection of English translations of the Quran.

In tracing a movement led primarily by South Asian Muslim converts, Lawrence discusses some of the challenges associated with transforming rhythmic Arabic into prosaic English while remaining faithful to the Quran’s sacred sounds and lofty meanings.

The lecture takes place today, March 29 at 7 p.m. local time (2 p.m. EST) in the auditorium at University of New England’s Tangier Campus. It will be live-streamed to students and faculty on UNE’s two campuses in Maine, USA, and to viewers around the world at www.une.edu/tgf/live.

Lawrence taught at Duke University for 40 years until he retired in 2011 as Marcus Family Humanities Professor of Religion.

He is also Professor of Islamic Studies Emeritus, specializing in pre-modern Islam, South Asian Sufism, and Islamicate cosmopolitans.

He is currently Adjunct Professor at the Alliance of Civilizations Institute in Istanbul. He received his Ph.D. in History of Religions at Yale University.
