Shia Muslims from more than 60 countries are arriving in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala
Tens of millions of Shia Muslims from more than 60 countries are arriving in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala to take part in mourning rituals on Arbaeen. The majority of the pilgrims marching toward Karbala, located about 100 kilometers south of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, walk barefooted to show their devotion to Imam Hussein, peace be upon him. Meanwhile security has been stepped up in Iraq, especially in Karbala and nearby areas to protect pilgrims against possible terrorist attacks. Arbaeen marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and his faithful companions in the battle of Karbala.
