A group of more than 30 people organised by Muslim Hikers, an outdoor activities network based in Coventry, successfully reached Mount Everest base camp in an expedition that raised £50,000 for Charity Right, which provides regular school meals to combat child hunger.

According to BBC, the trek, led by founder Haroon Mota, marked his third high-altitude expedition despite suffering from long Covid. Participants endured extreme conditions, including temperatures of -20°C and low oxygen levels at high altitude. Mota described the journey as a “special experience” and praised the achievement of all 33 participants reaching base camp safely, including members from the US, Australia, and the Middle East.

Muslim Hikers, which aims to promote diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility in outdoor activities, plans another Everest trip in November, which is already fully booked with a waiting list.

Mota said the expedition provided participants with a “mindful reset to connect with nature, connect with God,” and highlighted the group’s mission to tackle underrepresentation of Muslims and people of colour in outdoor sports, foster role models, and encourage positive visibility.

Since its founding during the pandemic, Muslim Hikers has hosted more than 32 hiking events for over 4,000 participants, combining adventure with community engagement, prayer, and halal meals.
