“Supermoon” Illuminates Night Sky in Spectacular Display

Skywatchers around the world will witness a stunning “supermoon” on Monday night, when the full moon appears larger and brighter than usual. According to NASA, this “October supermoon” is the first of three such events in 2025. The phenomenon occurs when the moon reaches its full phase while being closest to Earth, making it appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest full moon of the year.

Derek Pitts, chief astronomer at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute, noted that supermoons are not rare but occur several times annually. The moon will be about 361,000 kilometers from Earth, visible to the naked eye under clear skies. Two more supermoons are expected in November and December.
