Freemuslim’s s UN Representative Urges Prevention of Wars, Violence on International Day of Peacekeepers
The global community came together on Thursday, May 30th, to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
This annual observance paid tribute to the dedication, professionalism, and bravery of the remarkable men and women who have served in UN peacekeeping missions. It also remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace.
The theme for this year’s celebration was “Fit for the Future, Building Better Together”, which highlights the UN’s commitment to adapting and embracing new solutions to respond to upcoming challenges and build sustainable peace.
The event included a wreath-laying ceremony performed by the UN Chief, the presentation of the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, and the awarding of the 2023 Dag Hammarskjöld Medals.
Active uniformed officers were also honored at a medal parade recognizing their service to global peace.
Mujtaba Akhwand, Shia Rights Watch’s UN representative, was among personalities giving a lecture at this event.
He expressed regret on the fact that “there is no focus on people on the ground who are doing the peace building”.
On behalf of FreeMuslims Organization, Akhwand emphasized the importance of presenting awards and recognizing the individuals who have prevented wars, atrocities, violence, discomforts, or any other distractions in people’s lives and livelihoods.
He further called on the UN to pay attention to individuals, community leaders, citizens and civil society members “who are part of keeping peace in different regions in the world”.
