Global Index for Free and Fair Elections Hits Record Low in 2023
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) has reported a significant decline in the global index for free and fair elections, marking the largest drop on record for 2023, an article by VOA reported today. This decline continues a troubling trend, with democratic performance decreasing for eight consecutive years, the longest period of decline since records began in 1975.
The report indicates that government intimidation and irregularities in the electoral process are on the rise. Specific issues highlighted include fraudulent voter registration practices and discrepancies in vote-counting procedures. Additionally, the report notes the increasing threats of foreign interference in elections, which have raised concerns about the integrity of democratic processes.
Disinformation campaigns and the growing use of artificial intelligence in political campaigns further complicate the electoral landscape. Voter participation has also seen a decline, falling to 55.5% of eligible voters in 2023, down from 65.2% in 2008. IDEA’s findings emphasize the urgent need for action to protect the credibility of elections globally, as nearly 20% of elections between 2020 and 2024 saw losing candidates or parties reject the results.
