UNICEF Warns of Near Collapse of Education System in Gaza
……..
UNICEF has warned that Gaza’s education system is on the brink of collapse due to the ongoing Israeli war, citing extensive damage to schools and massive disruption to learning since October 2023. The UN children’s agency said the scale of destruction has left hundreds of thousands of children without access to formal education, raising serious concerns about long-term consequences for an entire generation.
According to UNICEF, around 638,000 children in Gaza have been forced out of classrooms as a result of the conflict. The organisation reported that approximately 98 percent of schools have been destroyed or severely damaged, making the resumption of education extremely difficult in the near future. It also said that the education sector has suffered heavy human losses.
UNICEF stated that about 1,000 teachers and education staff have been killed, along with nearly 20,000 students. The agency highlighted additional risks, including unexploded ordnance near schools and restrictions on educational supplies. It called for urgent international action to protect civilians, ensure safe learning environments, and uphold children’s right to education.
