UN Chief Warns Nearly 700 Million Face Hunger, Urges Global Action to Reform Food Systems

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that over 673 million people worldwide are currently going to bed hungry, calling the situation “a moral outrage that demands collective action.” He urged world leaders to undertake urgent steps to build fair and sustainable food systems, as reported by Khaama Press.

In a message marking World Food Day on Thursday, Guterres stressed that global hunger is reaching “alarming levels.” He emphasized that food security and environmental sustainability are inseparable, calling for cross-border and cross-sector cooperation to develop systems that “feed people and protect the planet.”

The UN attributes the surge in hunger, now at its highest level in decades, to factors like conflict, climate change, and inequality, disproportionately affecting regions like sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

Guterres called on governments, international agencies, and the private sector to immediately increase financial resources and political commitment to end hunger. He specified that urgent investment is needed in small farmers, climate-smart agriculture, and equitable access to resources to effectively break the cycle of hunger. Analysts view his appeal as highlighting serious concerns over rising food costs and declining humanitarian aid.
