UN Urges Protection for Journalists in Somalia on World Press Freedom Day

The United Nations emphasized the critical need to safeguard journalists in Somalia during World Press Freedom Day observances on Saturday, Xinhua reported. James Swan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, warned that harassment and intimidation against media workers threaten the country’s rebuilding efforts.

In a statement issued from Mogadishu, Swan stressed that independent journalism is vital for Somalia’s development, enabling citizens to access information and hold institutions accountable. This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of AI on Press Freedom,” highlighted challenges posed by emerging technologies.

Swan called on the Somali government to uphold press freedom commitments, noting that 2025 marks a pivotal year for media sustainability amid AI-driven disruptions. The UN also honored journalists killed in conflict zones, including Somalia, where at least five reporters have died since 2023, according to watchdog groups.

Somalia ranks among the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists, with frequent attacks by armed groups and political factions. The UN urged reforms to prosecute crimes against media personnel and ensure transparent information flows.
