UN Condemns Israel’s Killing of Journalists in Gaza

The UN human rights office has condemned Israel’s alleged deliberate targeting of journalists in Gaza, stating that such actions constitute war crimes, Anadolu Agency reported. Since October 7, 2023, 211 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks. UN spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan emphasized that journalists are protected as civilians under international humanitarian law and must never be targeted while performing their duties.
Al-Kheetan criticized Israel’s refusal to allow foreign journalists into Gaza, calling it a violation of the right to access information. He urged Israel to comply with international law, uphold the principle of distinction between civilians and combatants, and protect civilians from attacks. The UN also called for prompt, independent investigations into alleged violations and accountability for perpetrators.
Additionally, Al-Kheetan urged third states to prevent violations, cooperate with the ICC, and use universal jurisdiction to prosecute crimes under international law.
