EU Report: Nearly Half of Muslims Face Daily Discrimination

A recent report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) reveals that 47% of Muslims in the EU experience racial discrimination, a significant increase from 39% in 2016, a UN website reported. The survey, which included nearly 10,000 respondents across 13 EU countries, found the highest rates of discrimination in Austria (71%), Germany (68%), and Finland (63%).

The number of Muslims in the EU has grown considerably, currently estimated at around 26 million, representing about 5% of the population. This increase is attributed to the influx of individuals fleeing conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.

FRA Director Sirpa Rautio highlighted a disturbing rise in anti-Muslim sentiment, exacerbated by conflicts in the Middle East and dehumanizing rhetoric. Despite the prevalence of discrimination, only 6% of victims report incidents to authorities.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns that rising anti-Muslim bigotry threatens the rights and freedoms of all. Recent measures include a new resolution to appoint a UN Special Envoy to combat Islamophobia.
