UNHCR Raises Alarm Over Deportation of Afghan Refugees from Islamabad, Rawalpindi

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Pakistan has voiced serious concerns regarding the expulsion of Afghan nationals from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Khaama Press reported. The agency is aware of the Pakistani government’s order mandating that all Afghans holding the ACC card must vacate these cities and return to Afghanistan immediately.

In a statement issued on February 1, the UNHCR confirmed that, under the latest directives from the Pakistani authorities, Afghan nationals possessing POR cards are also obligated to leave Islamabad and Rawalpindi. This decision comes despite the fact that their residence permits remain valid until June 30 of this year.

Moreover, the UNHCR indicated that Afghans who have been accepted for resettlement in third countries are also subject to this relocation mandate. These individuals must depart from Islamabad and Rawalpindi by March 31, 2025, as per the Pakistani government’s decision.

The expulsion of Afghan refugees has sparked significant concern regarding the safety and security of those impacted. Many of these individuals have limited resources and are already vulnerable due to their refugee status. The UNHCR’s appeal highlights the urgent need for increased international support to safeguard their rights and welfare during this challenging transition.

The mass return of Afghans from Pakistan, especially under these conditions, could further exacerbate the already fragile infrastructure and resources in Afghanistan. As more people are compelled to return, international organizations and governments must enhance their support to ensure that these returnees have access to essential services, shelter, and opportunities to rebuild their lives.
