UN Votes for ICJ Probe into Israel’s Role in Gaza Crises
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on Friday calling on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to investigate Israel’s humanitarian obligations regarding the delivery of aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza, Arab News reported.
The resolution, drafted by Norway and co-sponsored by countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Spain, received support from 137 member states, while Israel, the US, and 10 others voted against it.
The resolution expresses grave concern over the humanitarian crisis in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and urges Israel to comply with its obligations under international law. Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Kravik highlighted the dire situation, stating that approximately 45,000 Palestinians have been killed since the onset of the conflict, and criticized Israel for not facilitating humanitarian access.
The ICJ’s advisory opinions, though significant, are not legally binding. The resolution aims to seek clarity on Israel’s responsibilities and the international community’s role in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
