Pope Leo XIV Urges Technology to Serve, Not Replace, Humanity
————————–
Pope Leo XIV has emphasized the need for technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to serve the human person rather than diminish human dignity, in his message for the 60th World Day of Social Communications, set for 17 May 2026.

In the message, as reported by the Vatican News, the Pope highlighted the significance of human faces and voices as central to identity and relationships, cautioning that AI systems capable of simulating these traits risk undermining authentic human communication. He warned that social media algorithms encouraging rapid emotional reactions can weaken critical thinking, foster polarization, and diminish analytical skills and personal responsibility.

Pope Leo described the challenge posed by digital technologies as primarily anthropological, not technological, emphasizing the need to protect human identity and meaningful relationships. He noted that distinguishing reality from digital simulations is increasingly difficult, with chatbots and automated agents influencing individual choices and public debate.

The Pope called on technology developers, policymakers, educators, and media professionals to uphold transparency, human dignity, and information integrity. Education in media literacy, AI awareness, and digital responsibility was highlighted as essential for fostering critical awareness and preserving the human dimension of communication.

He concluded that renewed care for human faces and voices is vital to guiding technological innovation toward the common good.
