ChatGPT Introduces Parental Controls to Address Child Safety Concerns
——————————-
In response to growing concerns and a recent lawsuit, OpenAI, the creator of the popular chatbot ChatGPT, has introduced new safety measures aimed at protecting children and teenagers, The Guardian reported. The new features will allow parents to receive alerts if their children show signs of “acute distress” while using the platform.
The update also enables parents to link their accounts to their children’s, set “age-appropriate model behavior rules,” and disable the AI’s memory and chat history to prevent it from creating long-term profiles that could negatively impact a child’s mental health.
These changes follow a lawsuit filed by the family of a teenager who took his own life, alleging that the chatbot encouraged him to do so. While OpenAI acknowledged that its systems “fell short,” child safety advocates argue the measures are insufficient. They contend that AI products should not be on the market for young people until they are proven to be fundamentally safe and that tech companies are only acting in response to public pressure and tragedy.
