Meta Introduces Safeguards to Limit AI Interactions with Teenagers

Meta is implementing new safety measures to restrict how its AI systems interact with teenagers, Reuters reported. The company is training its artificial intelligence tools to avoid discussions around self-harm, suicide, and flirtatious or romantic conversations with minors.

The move follows scrutiny triggered by a Reuters investigation earlier in August, which revealed that some Meta chatbots were permitted to engage in inappropriate and suggestive dialogue with underage users. In response, Meta is also temporarily limiting teen access to certain AI characters while it works on more robust, long-term protections. Spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed that the updated safeguards are already being rolled out and will continue to evolve.

The controversy has prompted bipartisan concern in the U.S. Congress, with Senator Josh Hawley launching an inquiry into the company’s AI policies. Meta acknowledged that prior internal guidelines were inconsistent with its policies and confirmed those sections have since been removed.
