Survey Finds 87% of Game Developers Using AI to Cut Costs

A new Google Cloud survey shows that 87 percent of video game developers are using artificial intelligence (AI) agents to automate tasks and reduce production costs, Reuters reported. The study, conducted with The Harris Poll, surveyed 615 developers in the U.S., South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden between late June and early July.
Respondents said AI tools help streamline repetitive work such as processing text, voice, code, audio, and video, allowing more focus on creative development. About 94 percent believe AI will lower overall development costs in the long term.
The findings come as the gaming industry faces rising expenses, prolonged production cycles, and job losses, with more than 10,000 layoffs reported last year. However, concerns remain over job security, intellectual property rights, and data ownership, with 63 percent of developers highlighting uncertainties around licensing and content ownership. Despite challenges, analysts expect growth with new premium titles and consoles launching in 2024 and 2025.
