Uyghur Groups Welcome US Bill Targeting Genocide Perpetrators

Five major Uyghur organisations have welcomed the introduction of the bipartisan Uyghur Genocide Accountability and Sanctions Act (UGASA) in the US Congress, The News Mill reported. The bill, introduced by Senator Dan Sullivan, Congressman Chris Smith, Congressman Tom Suozzi, and Senator Jeff Merkley, seeks to strengthen US measures against China’s persecution of Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities.

UGASA proposes sanctions on individuals and entities involved in forced labour, mass surveillance, and forced organ harvesting. It bans US government procurement linked to Uyghur forced labour, mandates public reporting on abuses, supports survivors, and demands answers on missing or detained relatives of Uyghur Americans.

It also increases oversight of US companies potentially complicit through investments or technology transfers. At a Washington press conference, Uyghur leaders called for swift passage of the bill. CFU Executive Director Rushan Abbas said the legislation is a vital step toward accountability for ongoing atrocities.
