Istanbul’s Iconic Hagia Sophia Embraces AI, Modern Tech to Enhance Visitor Experience

Istanbul’s historic Hagia Sophia, standing for 15 centuries and rebuilt three times, has integrated advanced technologies to protect its heritage while improving visitor experience, Iqna.ir reported. Originally converted into a mosque after Istanbul’s conquest, it was declared a museum in 1934 and reopened as a mosque in 2020.

The General Directorate of Foundations, under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, manages the site with around 300 staff, including security and coordinators. Since January 2020, a visitor management system separates worshippers and tourists, eliminating long queues and protecting the mosque’s architecture and mosaics.

An audio narration system launched in January 2024 offers explanations in 23 languages, enhancing understanding without disturbing prayers. The security system was upgraded with AI-supported cameras that alert personnel if visitors enter restricted areas, increasing response speed and safeguarding the structure.

Restoration projects continue, focusing on the mosque’s domes, minaret, and courtyard buildings. A digital twin project supports these efforts, ensuring Hagia Sophia remains a protected cultural landmark while welcoming millions of visitors annually.
