Stunning 72,000 Tech-firm Employees Laid Off Worldwide in H1

Tech companies worldwide have laid off 72,000 employees in the first half of 2025, Anadolu Agency reported citing data from Layoffs.fyi. This marks a continued slowdown in layoffs, following approximately 213,000 job cuts in the first half of 2023 and around 100,000 in the first half of 2024. The number of layoffs in H1 2025 decreased by 28% compared to the same period last year.

Microsoft announced it laid off 3,000 workers in May as part of restructuring efforts, totaling 12,000 layoffs in the first six months of the year, with plans to cut an additional 9,000 employees, representing 4% of its global workforce. In May, cybersecurity company CrowdStrike revealed it would reduce its workforce by 5% to adapt to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

Despite the layoffs, the market capitalizations of tech firms have increased. According to Companiesmarketcap.com, chipmaker Nvidia leads with a market value of $3.8 trillion, followed by Microsoft at $3.7 trillion, Apple at $3.2 trillion, Amazon at $2.4 trillion, and Alphabet at $2.2 trillion.
