Pope Leo Warns of AI’s Impact on Youth and Human Values

Pope Leo cautioned global political leaders on Saturday about the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI), particularly its impact on younger generations. Speaking at a Roman Catholic Jubilee event in Rome attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and lawmakers from 68 countries, the pontiff emphasized the need for AI to remain a tool serving humanity—not replacing it.

He highlighted the importance of protecting “healthy, fair and sound lifestyles,” especially for youth, and drew a clear distinction between the static nature of AI memory and the dynamic creativity of human memory. “Our personal life has greater value than any algorithm,” he said, stressing that genuine social relationships go beyond the patterns created by machines.

Pope Leo, who assumed the papacy in May, has previously expressed concern over AI’s impact on employment and its ethical use in media. He urged responsible development and application of AI to preserve human dignity and creativity.
